In the local news this week, twenty dogs were seized from a property in Hampden, Maine, south of Bangor. These twenty dogs were a large breed, similar to that of a Great Dane. They were being bred and kept in a unheated barn. With the temperatures below freezing recently and dropping to single digits, these dogs were in danger of freezing to death. Someone had called the authorities and told them about the conditions. After the animal welfare officers came in to inspect the first time, they told the owner to improve the conditions immediately and he didn’t.
